TYPICALITY OF MODENA

Modena, located in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, is famous for a number of typicalities that represent its culture, history and culinary tradition. Here are some of the main typicalities of Modena.

What to eat in Modena:

  • Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena: This is perhaps Modena's most famous product. Traditional balsamic vinegar is a condiment aged in wooden barrels and has a distinctive sour flavor. It is used to dress salads, meat, fish and cheese.
  • Prosciutto di Modena: Prosciutto crudo di Modena is another high-quality product. Made from pork, it is salted and cured to create a rich, complex flavor. It is often enjoyed thinly sliced and served with melon or in appetizers.
  • Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese: Although the main production takes place in nearby Reggio Emilia, Parmigiano-Reggiano is a key ingredient in Modenese cuisine. This hard cheese is renowned for its intense flavor.
  • Tortellini: Tortellini are a fresh navel-shaped pasta, often filled with meat, cheese or vegetables. They are a traditional dish of Emilia-Romagna and are usually served in broth or with rich sauces.
  • Gnocco Fritto: Gnocco fritto is a local specialty, a kind of fried dough pancake that can be served with ham, cheese or other toppings.
  • Tagliatelle al Ragù (or Tagliatelle with sauce): This is a classic dish of Emilia-Romagna. Tagliatelle is a long pasta, similar to fettuccine, served with a rich and tasty meat sauce known as ragù. It is the basis for the famous dish internationally known as "spaghetti bolognese."
  • Balsamella: Balsamella is a white sauce made with butter, flour and milk and is a common ingredient in many dishes, including lasagna and cannelloni.
  • Zampone and Cotechino: These are traditional sausages made from pork. They are often served with lentils during New Year's Eve dinner, as they are said to bring good luck.
  • Salamini and Salumi: Modena produces a variety of delicious cured meats, including salamini, coppa and pancetta.
  • Modenese Sweets: Among local desserts, don't miss "Torta Barozzi," a dense and rich chocolate cake, and "Amaretti di Modena," sweet and crunchy cookies.
  • Lambrusco Wine: Lambrusco is a sparkling wine typical of Emilia-Romagna and can be enjoyed in different varieties, from dry to sweet.
